Netflix is an American enterprise and a streaming service which has a variety of TV shows, movies, series, shorts, etc with a subscription.[1] It was originally launched at August 29, 1997. Some countries (See Banned countries) block Netflix by local restrictions, like China and Crimea.
Netflix released Between at May 21, 2015. The last episode of season 2 was premiered at June 30, 2016.
Banned countries
The following countries block Netflix:
- China
- Crimea
- North Korea
- Syria
- Russia
China
Due to the strict licensing rules there, Netflix is officialy blocked in China; But many people watch Netflix shows by accessing it through VPNs, unofficial streaming sites, or file transfering in different platforms. One example of a series that people could see using those methods was 'Squid Game'.[2]
North Korea
The North Korea's internet is just 28 websites. Netflix is banned in that country due to the sanctions US made against the regions and local restrictions.
Crimea
In Crimea, Netflix is not available because US established sanctions against Russia by the annexation of Crimea to the Russian territory and Netflix would gain little money, the average Crimean wins $200 a month. Also, mostly of the Crimean people aren't interested in what Netflix has to offer.
Syria
Netflix is not available in Syria due to a reason similar to the North Korea's one; sanctions from the US due to supporting terrorism and creating weapons. Additionally, Syria since the '70s created a strict censorship of films & movies. Average person in Syria would not be able to see Netflix because of the Syria's poverty.
Russia
Netflix is not available in Russia because the company suspended its services in March 2022 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This decision was linked to international sanctions, payment system restrictions, and new Russian laws requiring streaming services to carry state-controlled TV channels, which Netflix refused to comply with. As a result, Netflix stopped accepting new subscriptions and later suspended new ones. Since then, access to Russia has only been possible unofficially through VPNs, foreign payment methods, or pirated content.
Number of users
As of 2021, Netflix users were between 207-213 million people, this is six times larger than it was in 2013.[3]
